A message is automatically marked as read when the user opens the message in a
new window or if it's displayed in the Message Pane. If you browse a list of
unread messages with the Message Pane open, the messages will be marked as read,
which can be annoying.

There's an option in Outlook Express where you specify N seconds the program
should wait while you're viewing a message before it marks the message as read
(very convenient, it usually takes a few seconds anyway to actually read any
message).

You can also disable automatic marking of messages as read, so it has to be done
manually (which is what I prefer doing, so I can keep track of read/unread
messages more carefully). To help with that, there are toolbar buttons for "Mark
as Read", "Mark Unread" and "Mark All as Read".

So basically what I'm asking for is:

1. Option to disable automatic Mark as Read feature
2. Option to set amount of seconds the program should wait while you're viewing
a message before marking it as read
3. Three additional toolbar buttons: Mark as Read, Mark Unread, and Mark All as Read

This would be very helpful to keep track of read messages. I'd also help those
accustomed to this feature from Outlook Express to make the transition to
Mozilla Thunderbird.

This should probably be two separate bugs:

bug x (this bug?):

Additional toolbar button (with dropdown options): Mark as un-/read (default),
mark thread un-/read, and Mark All as un-/Read.

Scott, should someone (reporter?) spin off a 2nd bug?

while we're all asking for amendments to "mark" functionality, i still miss
NS4.xx's MARK BY DATE extraordinarily... it's especially convenient when you
only want the last month or week or day's postings...

Both features are available in the latest build (20031126).
However, the automatic mark as read feature after n seconds has not been checked
in so far.
