The new icon looks nice at 32x32 etc, but at 16x16 as it appears in the taskbar it is too similar visually to the "My Documents" and other folder icons, especially at high screen resolutions on small displays. As such it is easy to hit the wrong taskbar button (My Documents/Thunderbird) when you are using peripheral or unfocused vision to locate the button based on the picture. The 32x32 icon has a little thunderbird flame graphic inset, some piece of detail like that to boldly differentiate the icon would probably make selecting Thunderbird easier when other Folder windows especially My Documents are open.

There was a BLUE envelope at one point (0.1 or 0.2, or was it an extension?). That was VERY distinctive on the Windows Quick Launch panel. While not as graphically sensitive as the current 16x16, it was MUCH more usable.
