I have also observed this same problem with Mozilla's -remote command.

Is this really a TB bug? If clicking the link is causing the page to open in FF, then wouldn't the problem be that FF is not parsing the args correctly? (Even if this *is* TB's problem, I can't imagine it's a "build config" bug.) Is 'new-tab' in fact a supported option? If FF is already open, and the command line FF -remote "openurl(about:, new-tab)" is entered from a shell, is there a new tab opened then? (I can't tell, don't have Linux.)
Summary: MozillaFirebird -remote openurl($url, new-tab) doesn't work if both firebird and thunderbird are running. → Firefox -remote openurl($url, new-tab) doesn't work if both FF and Thunderbird are running.

I was just going to file a bug on FreeBSD for the same thing. I'm using Thunderbird 0.9 and Firefox 1.0 on FreeBSD 5.3-STABLE, and I get: Error: Failed to send command: 509 internal error When trying to use firefox -remote. BTW, new-window works correctly, though.

Is anyone still having problems with this with the latest version of Thunderbird (2.0.0.14)? If no response, then I'll close as WFM given the age of this bug and not having seen anything related to this.
