User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.6) Gecko/20040206 Firefox/0.8
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.6) Gecko/20040206 Firefox/0.8

The Windows installer for FireFox 0.8 steals file associations for (at least)
.gif, .jpg and .png files without prompting.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Assign graphics file associations to another program
2.Install Firefox

Actual Results:
Graphics files (at least gif, jpeg and PNG format) are associated with Mozilla
Firefox.

Expected Results:
Should have left the associations alone, or at the very least prompted to
associate them with Firefox.

I have come across this with other Mozilla releases. It is a very poor practice
to steal file associations without prompting the user, especially
marginally-related filetypes such as graphics. One would expect FireFox to
associate itself with html and possibly xml files, but stealing gif jpeg and PNG
is somewhat unexpected. Especially in cases where these filetypes are already
associated with a different type of program (graphics viewer, rather than web
browser), this violated the rule of least astonishment.
