Current plan is to have a dialog appear that briefly explains what bookmarks
keywords are and offers a field to type in the search term, so quick searches
aren't so useless from the menu.

Maybe it would be better to leave this as a geek feature and not have default
keyworded search bookmarks. I think it's worth considering the solution of
removing the problem UI rather than adding on to it.
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20040914 Firefox/0.10

Seems as if default keyworded search bookmarks are gone with 1.0pr, along with
all other default bookmarks. I don't mind too much, but I know I've told quite a
few of my relatively computer literate friends about 'dict' and they love it.
Is/was there a reason to remove all the default bookmarks?

As for having a dialog appear, I assume you mean having a menu option which
would have this pop up, like the "Promote Firefox" option under the Help menu. I
personally think this is a good idea. Nongeeks aren't going to root around in
menus much, but the more curious users would love finding the keywords function,
I think.
Not a "blocker"

non-search bookmarks not possible; should be".

Seems to me that bug 306221 isn't an alternate solution, but part of this one. Otherwise all bookmarks with keywords could automatically go to the site (minus the trailing search options) - eg. clicking http://www.imdb.com/find?q=%s;s=all would go to http://www.imdb.com/.
Sorry for the bugspam, just found the "otherwise" alternative I mentioned, is bug 298697.
