User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.7.2) Gecko/20040803 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.7.2) Gecko/20040803 I have two POP and two IMAP servers. Even if I do not look at any of my IMAP servers, as long as I have a single Mozilla window open, eg, Composer, every five minutes or so, I get the following popup. Alert ! Server n.n.n.n has disconnected. The server may have gone down or there may be a network problem. [ok] This is new, I have never seen these popups before version 1.7.1 (and probably 1.7) On another extremely similar machine, also running version 1.7.1, and which uses one of the same POP server, but which does *not* have these IMAP servers installed, I do *not* get these popups. This bug is extremely annoying, because every few minutes, abruptly, the focus is stolen from the current task. The focus is shifted to Mozilla and the stupid, useless, popup has to be cleared..... Who cares that the imap server has disconnected when I am not using my imap email (or not browsing, or not composing)..... This did not happen before 1.7.1 (and probably 1.7) Cheers ! Michel Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Have any Mozilla function open, eg: Composer, even if not used. 2. 3. Actual Results: Constant imap "Disconnected" popup, even when not using Messenger, that steals the focus abruptly. Expected Results: No such focus-stealing (useless) popup

two questions - do you have check for new messages every XX minutes checked for your imap server(s), and do you have automatic deletion of XX days old messages from your junk mail folder set for the imap account(s)? Does turning off either of them make the problem go away? The automatic check for new messages should *not* cause the alert to pop up; I'm not sure about the automatic aging of messages in the junk folder.

this should fix it. This has been checked in on the trunk with some other fixes, but needs to be fixed on 1.7 branch as well...

David's questions: 1 ---- do you have check for new messages every XX minutes checked for your imap server(s), No (it never was set) 2 ---- do you have automatic deletion of XX days old messages from your junk mail folder set for the IMAP account(s)? Yes, and I removed it, roughly 24 hours ago, on my two IMAP accounts. 3 ---- Does turning off either of them make the problem go away? Yes. Since I turned off the automatic deletion of xx days old IMAP messages, roughly 24 hours ago, the problem has never reappeared. 4 ---- The automatic check for new messages should *not* cause the alert to pop up; I cannot tell because I never had it enabled.......... 5 ---- I'm not sure about the automatic aging of messages in the junk folder. Since turning it off made the problem disappear for now more than 24 hours, it is plausible that this was the cause of the spurious "disconnect" popup alerts. Thank you for your prompt response and especially for your successful recommendation. Michel

great; I'm going to check this patch into the 1.7.3 branch so the next 1.7.3 release will have the fix in it.

David Turning off the purge-by-aging of the IMAP Trash appears to have fixed or reduced another bug. Before turning the purge-by-age, I typically crashed the Whole Machine when closing the *last* open window of Mozila 1.7.1 or 1.7.2 ... ... There was a lot of churning when closing that las window, even though the Mozilla "Quick Launch" was enabled. ... ... So, I had to always leave an empty Composer Mozilla window open to avoid a almost sure Windows crash (Win98SE, fully updated and scrubbed). Since the moment I turned off the IMAP purge-by-age, it appears that Windows crashing when closing the *last* open Mozilla window has been reduced ... ... I cannot yet say that it has been cured.....

ok, thx, but I'd still like to leave this bug as fixed. If there's some other problem caused by the junk mail purging code via imap, and it can be recreated on a 1.8 trunk build, then we can open a new bug.
