todo list for snews:

1) if the news server is secure, we need to use port 563
2) if the news server is secure, we need to create a secure transport (see pav's
imaps code)

one day, in the future

3) properly handle the snews:// protocol

moving this up to m15. I think we can get secure news working pretty easy.
Target Milestone: M17 → M15
I've got secure news working in my local tree. the changes are pretty minor.

the snews migrations were solved a while ago, all that was waiting was some
backend work.

namely, creating the socket transport of type "ssl" and setting the default port
to 563, if the server was secure.

I've got those changes in my local tree, and I'm testing and re-testing.

this would be a great thing for beta, as it would allow people to read articles
on secnews.netscape.com

moving to m14, and adding keywords dogfood (because of secnews.netscape.com) and
beta1
Keywords: beta1, dogfood

specifically, I can now read secnews.netscape.com/netscape.champions, and we'd
like those folks to use 6.0 right?
adding daver and phil to the cc list, hoping they want secure news for beta1.
I posted to secnews.netscape.com/netscape.champions last night (using mozilla)
asking if secnews was an important feature for beta.

I've already gotten responses, the champions want it.
Whiteboard: fix in hand
I'm sure the champs want it, and so do I, but this is a total feature, not a
bug, and I'm fine with release noting it for beta1. Heck, I'm thrilled we're
getting it at all :-)
Keywords: relnote
fair enough. I'll wait until m15 to check it in.

I don't think we're too far away from SMTP over SSL, either.

adding lord and mwelch to the cc list, so they know what's going on.

they need to tell the BXA (BXA == Bureau of Export Administration, US Dept. of
Commerce. http://www.bxa.doc.gov/)

they have to keep the feds notified of any changes in crypto functionality.

migrating, then reading that newsgroup in 5.0....it seems that it just keep
processing.....I don't even get the login dialog display for login....
karen, let's meet today (tuesday) and we'll try to figure this out.
Used 04-04-13-M15 commercial build:
I can login to secure news by using Windows today's 04-04-13-M15 commercial
build now......maybe because I just talked to Seth few minutes ago...and it
works!! (-- just kidding--)I will test on other platforms!
It seems that I cannot verify this bug on the other platforms (Linux & Mac).
The migration seems having problem for these two platforms.....
what migration problems? is there a bug logged?
I only found bu#34302 logged for Linux from Grace.
But I cannot find for Mac
Bug#34744 logged for migration problem of Mac platform.
Used today's 04-06-10-M15 Linux commercial build for secnews:
It still keep processing, don't even get the login dialog displayed.

Used today's 04-06-08-M15 Netscape6-mac.sea.bin build for secnews:
I got a Alert: "unknown error" displaying....

Windows didn't get these problems by using today's commercial build.
Symptom is still keeping the same as I described above.
Reopening this bug and adding pp on the keywords since problem only occurring on
Linux & Mac platforms. Clear Whiteboard & changed beta1 PDT- to beta2. Change
Target milestone from M14 to "---" .
Let developers to decide what the milestone it will be.

Putting on [nsbeta2+][6/01] radar. This work must be done by 06/01 or we may
pull this for PR2.
Whiteboard: [nsbeta2+][6/01]
Due to slip in schedule, moving this bug from [6/01] to [Will be minus on 6/15]
for fix deadline.
Whiteboard: [nsbeta2+][6/01] → [nsbeta2+][Will be minus on 6/15]
adding dependency. removing daver.

Bug 39154 "SSL connections for nntp and imap are broken" Blocked Secure News
for this bug!

From Beta 2 criteria, this is P3. So suggest won't hold beta 2 for this and will
add in the beta2 release notes if this still not fix at that time.....
Cleaning up status whiteboard by marking beta2 minus (6/15 has passed).

Are we just blocked on SSL at this point, or are there other issues pending?
If there are other issues, should secure news be pulled from the feature list?

Thanks,

Jim

It seems that I can access the secnews/newsgroups for Linux & Windows.
But from Mac, I am getting an error: Connection refused to the server.
Reopening this bug for sepecific the Mac platform. And I am using Mac 9.0/G4.
Adding pp on the keywords & changing the platform to Mac 9.0 only.

I thought the mac didn't have any SSL or security at all?
I think they are close to getting it. I didn't know it was working though.
reassigning back to seth... er.. seth's on sabbatical.. reassigning to alecf...

i'm pretty sure this should just be closed... but you could just add a
dependancy on the "mac ssl doesn't work" bug.

Let's just mark it a dup of the fact that cartman doesn't run on the Mac.
