298963 - installer seems to "finish", but clicking on Mozilla icon does nothing. (nightly build)

The nightly build dated 26-Jun-2005 appears to install Mozilla.
But the Mozilla application does nothing -- it doesn't even open up a window --
when I click on the icon.

(Perhaps it's starting, and then immediately exiting).
It doesn't even open up a window, or a Talkback dialog. Nothing. Like clicking
into empty space.


Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Download the latest nightly version from
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mozilla/nightly/latest-trunk/
mozilla-win32-installer.exe 26-Jun-2005 09:37

(Now is a good time to download the latest stable version from
http://www.mozilla.org/products/mozilla1.x/
)

2. Remove all installed versions of mozilla
(control panel -- remove programs -- Mozilla -- remove).

3. Run the ''nightly'' installer.

4. Accept all the defaults
(Well, I actually install on my F: drive
rather than the default C: drive.
I hope this doesn't make any difference)

Actual Results:  

After churning for a while,
the installer places a "Mozilla" icon on my desktop and my "quick launch" task
bar, then exits.

But clicking on those icons does nothing.
Like clicking into empty space.


Expected Results:  
I expected a window to open, the default home page to be displayed in it.
Or at least start the Talkback dialog to send crash results back to Mozilla.



Work-around:
Start over from the beginning
(Remove Mozilla 1.8b2 via the control panel ...)
except run the installer for the last stable version 1.7.8, rather than the
installer for the nightly build.

Then everything works as expected.

Perhaps this is a regression of

Bug 297725 : "[MAS, v1.8b2-0614+] Install Seems to Complete - Mozilla Does Not Load"
Bug 146355 : "Cannot install recent nightly builds"
Bug 234804 : "20040218 win32 install won't startup/20040219 crashes/will not start"

This is *not* a dup of
Bug 135222 : "Browser doesn't load after updating to daily build (blank/grey
window)"
because *nothing* seems to happen, not even opening a blank window.

Not a dup of
Bug 298887 : "Crash after Installation, when a previous version/directory of
Mozilla Suite exists [@ UTF8InputStream::ReadSegments 7a693f77]"
because it happens even when I clean out all old versions of Mozilla.

Could you please test it with a new current trunk build? Which was your build
id? (could you see at the beginning of the setup) I guess you got a build
without the patch from Bug 297725 and this is a dupe.
