When I bring up the mail window in today's build, and click on a message header, I get a seemingly infinite series of asserts and never see the mail message (at least, it hadn't appeared when I gave up, though perhaps it would have had I waited long enough): ###!!! ASSERTION: A Box's child is constantly growing!!!!!: 'passes < 10', file /builds/moz/mozilla/layout/xul/base/src/nsSprocketLayout.cpp, line 461 ###!!! Break: at file /builds/moz/mozilla/layout/xul/base/src/nsSprocketLayout.cpp, line 461 This may be the same problem as in bug 40294, but I'm reporting it separately since the two cases referenced in that bug are startup-time dialogs. Marking as a blocker because I can't repro my dogfood bug regarding mail replies without being able to view a mail message.
not sure if it's related, but I can get this assertion as well if I try placing this code in a xul file : <menulist editable="true"> <menupopup> <menuitem data="0" value="Do This"/> <menuitem data="1" value="Do That" /> <menuitem data="2" value="Do Some Other Thing" /> </menupopup> </menulist> This editable menulist element is not yet supported, but perhaps it might help tease out the problem looking at the current XBL.
Andreww says he's seeing his test case on Mac, so this isn't Linux only.

Summary: can't display message: infinite loop in box asserts → can't display message: loop in box asserts
this sounds like it's not a mailnews bug. Reassigning to evaughan who can perhaps help us track down whose bug it is. FWIW, I don't see this on Windows.
