Unable to Save E-bay Picture Files ever since I up dated to the latest version of Firefox.

When trying to download a file by right clicking over the image I get a file dialog which appears but the select 'Save File As' is completely missing.

The only thing that can be seen and selected from is: "Save Page As"

If I view the same E-bay auction through Internet Explorer the same pictures when right clicked over pop up a file dialog which says "Save Picture As"

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Go to URL above or any other E-bay auction under E-bay Motors using Firefox 3.5.1
2.Try to right click over the large photos of the motorcycle and you will see no provision for saving the photo
3.
Actual Results:

The only thing that can be seen and selected from is: "Save Page As" instead of the needed "Save Picture As".

Expected Results:
E-bay using Firefox should allow pictures to be saved when right clicked over poping up a file dialog which says "Save Picture As"
This works for me using FF3.5.1 on win32, I have a context menu with "save image as"
Can you try the Firefox safemode ?
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode
I just tested it in safe mode and still get the exact same problem to occur. I do not get the context menu with "save
image as"
Did you get the safemode dialog at startup ?
Are you logged into an ebay Account ?
Yes I got a window that popped up and said "you are now running in safe mode".

Yes I am logged in but let me try it without logging in as well. I just tried it without logging in and the same problem occurs with the URL http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140336341483
Same problem here,stupid bug.
The menu is very fuc*** up
Attached image what i mean
Same problem in safe mode, profile, and latest 3.5.2 from nightly ftp ,it's a bug,the menu is horrible .......
Yes precisely, Black Ps your screen shot shows exactly what I am experiencing in or out of safe mode.
I can reproduce the issue based on your screenshots.
I didn't analyze the page source yet but it seems tha there is a transparent layer above the image. The right click goes to the transparent layer and not to the image.

Workaround: use tools/page info/media/save as

This is a dupe AFAIK, IE ignores the layer if it's transparent and we not

I can reproduce the described behavior too but lets see what is causing this issue. Would be great if someone could create a minimized testcase from that page.

I tried to do the workaround that Matthias "matti" Versen list's but had no luck what so ever in figuring out how to do it. I did not see where the "tools/page" even is.

I do see a "tools" pull down at the top of the Firefox window but then there is no "info/media" under it.

Really if IE works fine the way it is supposed to with regard to right click and save over the pictures then I would hope Firefox should do the same.
I'm sure that this is the dupe.
If the image would contain a link you couldn't click the link because the div is above it and that would be a sure dupe of bug 102695 but I'm a little unsure about the right click in this case.

>Really if IE works fine the way it is supposed to with regard to right click

That something looks right doesn't mean that it is right. You don't right click the picture, you are clicking the invisible layer (the <div>) that is above the picture.

Firefox used to be my favorite browser until morons started to 'improve' it.

First I do research and save many eBay photos, now I have to go to IE7 to save all my photos.

Second on a regular basis firefox will not work I have to completely uninstall it wait a few days and reinstall it. I get a message about the SSL not working.

If those morons keep on making improvements I am going to permanently delete it.

At this time Google Chrome is horrible and crashes all the time or I would never have reinstalled Firefox.

Wake up Mozilla!

Roc, what would you say?

Yes, it is. And we've always behaved this way, so if something changed, it was Ebay.

Means we can dupe against bug 102695?
I am actually unable to save any photos from any site by using right click eBay or not. The save image as produces no results at all.

Fortunately IE7 still works.
Will this ever be fixed?
Addon https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/13802 can fix this bug for who needs to save pictures from eBay.

Thanks Aurum-Nigrum
Have not tried the above add on but I tried the recommendation below and it works.
Thanks William :)

For those who want the simplest way to download eBay pictures from the new eBay images page. In Firefox, simply choose "View>Page Style>No Style" (which disables java-script & CSS, and therefore the image protection) and then "Right Click>Save Image As" as you normally would."
The add on https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/13802 works very well. I find it extremely sad that someone outside firefox has to fix its problems.

But after upgrading to the new version of firefox it stopped working.

Lets face it firefox is the victim of incompetent designers. I used to love it now it is a pain to use because of these problems.
I reinstalled the above add on but evidently the geniuses at firefox prevented it from working in the new version. How about that, you make a mistake then prevent the fix.
View Page Style No Style does work to save photos, but it also totally changes the view of the page so you need to change back once you save your photo.

Again nice of firefox to add extra work for those who save photos. I do antique phonograph research so I save many photos.

IE7 is always reliable. Although I prefer firefox the constant irritations are driving me closer to returning to firefox.

Sad to see the decline of firefox it was so superior to IE6, I am tempted to upgrade to IE8 and delete firefox.
To Robert O'Callahan (:roc) (Mozilla Corporation) You claim: Yes, it is. And we've always behaved this way, so if something changed, it was
Ebay.

If this is so then why does IE7 not have any problems?

Only two answers Robert, either IE7 has a superior design not affected by eBay's change or you are wrong. From the performance of firefox lately I suspect the latter as the product reflects its representatives.

Ex Yugo salesmen out of work? Firefox needs good men.
>If this is so then why does IE7 not have any problems?
read the bug including comment #15 and #16 (with the link to bug 102695) and read https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/page.cgi?id=etiquette.html (point 1.1 , 1.2 , 1.3 )

Oh and yes, patches are always welcome.
Tell me how and I will delete all my comments. You are correct, they are all pointless.
I have now tried this, "Addon https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/13802 can fix this bug for who needs to save pictures from eBay." and it works well. I am using Firefox Version 3.5.9 with no issues. Don't forget to upgrade the add on as well as Firefox.

The only thing I noticed is that all of the photos on Ebay are enlarged irrespective of their image size and resolution. This can make it difficult to see details in the photo if the photo is a small image size and has lower resolution. When you select properties on a photo posted on Ebay you may see the dimensions as 800px x 600px but it will always be scaled to 1200px x 900px. Not too bad for 800px x 600px but when you do that to an image that is 500px x 375px you can't see much detail at all. Granted once you save the photo from Ebay and look at the photo on your computer it will display properly without any scaling.

I would recommend that if at all possible the scaling should made based on the original image size and adjust itself so that it can be displayed optimally on the Ebay page rather than be set the same for all images. For instance once saved on my computer the 500px x 375px image could be re-sized to 640px x 480px and still look fairly good. Anymore than that was no good at all.
Hello Photobucket,

I have Firefox/3.6.3 and I added this add on and just now updated it and it still does not work. If you upgrade to Firefox/3.6.3 and it still works I would really appreciate knowing. Thanks for sharing the post, I really appreciate it.

Best regards,

Steve
Hello Steve,

I have not upgraded my Firefox and since you are having trouble and I am not sure if it is the later version of Firefox causing it I think I will wait.

I would recommend contacting the developer of the add on. His details are posted below. Also check his site for all available add ons and make sure that you have the latest version. For me I am using Ebay Motors primarily so I am using the add on "eBay - Motors - Save Enlarged Pix"

Just upgraded Firefox to Version 3.6.8 and the Ebay photos works for me flawlessly.

Steve try upgrading to the latest Firefox version to see if this solves your issue.

I checked Ebay Motors and Ebay and photos on both sites are easy to save just like they were with the earlier version of Firefox I had prior to 3.6.3.
Hello Photobucket,

I am very impressed you wrote, thanks that was very nice of you. I now have version 3.6.8 and eBay photos will still not enlarge. In IE7 they work normally. In Firefox I can save Vendio photos, but IE7 will not let me save Vendio photos.

I appreciate your post, I will have to check and see if Firefox works properly on the laptop with Windows 7.

Thanks again,

Steve
The same problem applies on facebook, you can't save pictures. i`m running firefox 7 beta.
In case of Facebook there seems to be transparent div above the img element which disables
"Save Image As". So it is a bug or feature of Facebook.
Yes but if internet explore can do it ,firefox not.

It's the same with eBay. They put a transparent div over the top of pictures, presumably to prevent clueless users from being able to copy or save them.

This bug should be closed as invalid IMO.
I have upgraded to Firefox 11.0 but when I did that my add-on extensions transferred as well so not sure if the ability save photos on ebay using the latest version of Firefox without the addons. The two that I have used for saving the Ebay photos that work great are:

eBayItemDescriptionSavEnlargedPix 1.6.5 & SaveEbaymotorsEnlargedPix 1.1.7 They are written by Aurum-Nigrum.

Read about it here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/user/1503622/?src=api

As far as this bug being invalid goes I would have to disagree on the basis that if the Internet Explorer browser can save these same photos that Firefox can not then it is something that could be rectified within the Firefox program.
Another thing I have noticed with Ebay photos is that if the photos are not written into the description with HTML coding or are not available as a "click to view larger" then I am unable to save them even with the two addons I have. IE does not have this problem at all. You can save photos on ebay when you use IE to view the photos regardless if it is available larger or not.

Look at the examples below on Ebay to see what I mean. You can view the same auctions with photos on both IE and Firefox and you will see that only IE will let you save them. Here are some Ebay item numbers to try 200201604215,350412508726,370573541875,200003741869.

Try this Ebay item number, 230651087087. I can save the photos in IE but not in Firefox 11.0 even with my addons unless I go to View/Page Style and select "No Style" instead of the default of "Basic Page Style".

The image in that listing is covered by 2 absolutely positioned elements with transparent backgrounds (a DIV with z-index 1 and an A with z-index 2). So when you click the image, as far as Firefox is concerned you're clicking the A element that's on top of the image, not the image itself. That's why you don't get the image-specific items in the context menu.

I don't think that's a bug in Firefox, it's just how the page has been designed. I've no idea why it behaves differently in Internet Explorer though.
Ok I understand and agree with all that you said MJH except for the fact that you feel it is not a bug in Firefox. If we say it is not a bug ok but lets go beyond that and ask if IE can do it can't Firefox be designed to also do it? Many would agree that Firefox is so much better than IE including myself. That is all I am trying to bring up here.
I've no idea why it behaves differently in Internet Explorer though.

Well I do, Firefox has a bug and IE does not. Google Chrome does not have the bug either. Perhaps if we can establish that only firefox has this problem then we might be able consider the possibility of a bug.

Steve 2010-05-31 18:59:31 PDT that was me writing about this bug back in 2010, and the bug lives one. Evidently we need Terminex, or we can go on ignoring the bug. It is a good thing the bug is not a termite or firefox would be gone by now, which might not be too bad.
> Google Chrome does not have the bug either.

What makes you think that? Loading http://www.ebay.com/itm/230651087087 in Chrome doesn't give me a Save Picture As link either.
Yes, both Chrome and Opera do the same as Firefox.

It's easy enough to work around in Firefox anyway, without needing an add-on. Press Ctrl+I when viewing the listing, click on Media and select the picture from the list. There's a convenient "Save As" button right there. :)
From bug 582915, which is a dupe of this bug:

> There's a transparent div layered over the image which gets the events. So
> either IE is getting different markup, or this is a duplicate of bug 102695.

Fixing bug 102695 would solve this problem, but that doesn't look very likely to happen.
