Yeah, at the moment we aren't allowing the Inbox to have subfolders. If you
notice, Inbox can't be selected in the new folder dialog.

Has this bug been fixed? I have 2000121104 build on my win98 and could create
the folder in pop account

This is a parity with 4.x issue (i.e. In 4.x I could create a sub-folder under
my POP account inbox. I can't do the same in 6.x).
Comment 13•25 years ago
|

WTF? I created a sub-folder for the Inbox before (I can submit a screenshot if
needed). Why was this functionality removed?
If Mozilla isn't going to have this capability, appropriate menu items need to
be disabled at appropriate times. Otherwise it's just mean to the user.

Changing platform and OS to all. I use a Mac and filed a similar bug and it was
marked as a duplicate of this. The changed is justifiable since Windows users
are having the same difficulties. Also adding keyword "4xp" since this feature
is in Communicator 4.76.

I suggest we mark this WORKSFORME, INVALID or FIXED.
Expected results is now accomplished; a folder is created. Using build
2001011720, Windows98.
Putterman: the issue was not if I understand correctly about making subfolders
to the inbox, but rather that the folder wouldn't be created at all.

This bug is not fixed! I'm attaching a screenshot of my Mail Folders window.
In the inbox, you will see two subfolders (these were part of my Communicator
4.76 profile) titled "SPARS" and "Sursound". Notice how these folders are
subfolders of the inbox. I still can't create another subfolder for my inbox
using build 2001011708 on Mac OS 9.1. Nominating for mozilla1.0 while I'm at it.

about it ?
Comment 24•24 years ago
|

This annoyed me, so I figured out a workaround (as David wanted).
1. Create a folder in the root mail folder and name it how you want it.
2. Quit Mozilla
3. go to $ACCOUNT/*.slt/Mail/$MAILACCT/
4. make a directory called "Inbox.sbd"
5. move the "NewlyCreatedFolder" and "NewlyCreatedFolder.msf" into Inbox.sbd/
Unfortunatly, you can't make new folders anywhere within the Inbox tree.

If Ventifus' fix doesn't allow for folders to be subfolders of the inbox, as I
interpret it to be, then it is not an ideal workaround. If the screenshot
attached to this bug can't be duplicated with those lines of code, we're still
where we started.
Besides, can us non-programming savvy types actually make this change?
Comment 26•24 years ago
|
||
Ventifus' workaround doesn't actually involve any coding. You create the folder
anywhere in mozilla mail, exit mozilla, then basically move the new folder's
files to the 'Mail\your_account\Inbox.sbd\' folder (on windows anyway). Restart
mozilla and the folder should be moved to under Inbox.
My imported pop mail from 4.x has many Inbox subfolders and it works perfectly
fine. I can't create new folders directly under Inbox, but i've had no problems
creating subfolders of already existing subfolders in mozilla.
It looks like it's just <a
href="http://lxr.mozilla.org/seamonkey/source/mailnews/base/resources/content/msgFolderPickerOverlay.xul#55">blocked
</a> because some imap servers can't handle it. I'm guessing a real fix would
involve testing this somehow (or at least testing to see if it's pop3).

i found a workaround for WinNT, i dont know if it works all the time
* this should be done before opening the mail reader
1. go to the directory where the mail is stored usually under
C:\WINNT\Profiles\USERNAME\Application Data\Mozilla\Users50\USERNAME\XXX\Mail
where USERNAME is your login name, XXX is an auto-generated sequence of characters
2. copy the FILE and FILE.msf into Inbox.sbd
3. when you open the mail reader you already have a subfolder under Inbox
but i think making a subfolder under Inbox should be supported

Using Mozilla 0.9.3 on OS 9.1, I cannot create a folder in my inbox directly
(inbox is not an option as the folder's destination in the new folder dialog).
Yet I can create the folder, and drag and drop it onto my inbox within Mozilla
mail, and it goes there! Amazing! I suppose the only question now is do the
programmers want to make the dialog such that the folder goes right into the
inbox (that is, the folder can be a subfolder of the inbox within the dialog for
creating a new folder), or does this drag and drop solution suffice?

Comment 45•24 years ago

Navin,
I downloaded today's trunk build to test inbox subfolder creation. We have the
turbo turned on by default. Here are the list of tests cases that I did:
Created subfolders to inbox( level 1, level 2, level 3, level 4)-OK
renamed a subfolders-OK
Copied and moved messages to these subfolders from inbox via D&D, message menut
item-OK
Deleted a message in a subfolder-OK
Used context menu to compact that single folder-OK
Then I deleted several messages again from inbox, and inbox subfolders. I have
the pref to compact when the size limit exceeds 10kb. I know I deleted large
messages. I exit app and launched again. But it did not prompt me with a dlg to
compact folders at all. I tried a few times no luck.
Then I disabled the turbo mode from the prefs. Exit and launched the application
again. Then I was prompted with dlg to compact folders. But I noticed that
only one subfolder that I created was seen under inbox and level 2 to 4 folders
were not to be seen in the folder pane. I still see them where the profile files
are. The compaction went through but those other subfolders are not seen as
well as the messages in them seems to appear as gone from the 3 pane.
Comment 46•24 years ago

Talking to Navin on AIM. Looks like this has nothing to do with compaction. This
is to make sure that a subfolder can be created under inbox. And yes we can
create a subfolder under inbox. But I have stated the results as to what I did
see with the turbo turned on and as to what happens when it is switched off.
I will log a seperate bug for that issue.
Still need to verify subfolder creation on other two platforms. I will update
the bug as soon as I do so.
So far subfolder creation for inbox on win98-2001-09-25-05 has worked.

Also checked it to see what the behavior is when migrating a pop account from
4.x to 6.x which has subfolders to inbox. We correctly migrate these subfolders
as subfolders of inbox other than putting them at the account level.
