FreeBSD 4.1 20001023xx (trunk)

I try to browse to a PDF, and it tells me that it can't be viewed with mozilla.
I select to open it with another application, browse, type
"/usr/X11R6/bin/xpdf", select Ok (on the file requester), select Ok (on the
Downloading requester), and instead of opening it with the specified program
(xpdf), a save requester comes up, and it asks me what file I want to save it
as.
Confirmed on Linux 2000102221 (trunk) for any file type mozilla does not
recognize (or at least all I have tried).

Note that going into the preferences and setting up an application for a file
type works fine; it's only when you try to pick an application without having
one predefined that this bug occurs.
Anyone available to check under Win32? I suspect this might be different in
Win32. I see this as fairly serious. Did this ever work?

setting up an application does not always work so fine.
Not if you have the somewhat cryptic option "Ask before opening downloaded..."
checked. Filed bug 57582 about that.
I filed a cosmetic issue related to this problem under bug 58177. When the
'Open using' radio is selected, the edit box is still uneditable, ie. not activated.
I wonder if this is the same as what I'm seeing.
Using Netscape 6, I created a helper app mimetype for application/pdf. I think
went to http://www.moolenaar.net/ and clicked on one of the pdf links near the
bottom. The file is getting saved but the helper app isn't ever launched so the
document is never loaded and the document never attempts to load in the helper
app if it's already been launched. For me, the "ask me" checkbox doesn't help or
hurt my situation. Maybe I should file this as a separate bug?
This URL crashes for me, rtm linux rh6.2 bits.
I have not added any helper apps, and don't have
a pdf plugin installed.
The problem exists on Solaris as well, for any type.

nav triage team:

Should look into this, marking nsbeta1, target milestone mozilla0.9.1,
reassigning to pchen

currently i can open pdf files from web just fine, spawning acrobat reader as
helper app. But if i try to open a pdf file on local disk, it renders in browser
instead. 2001010517 linux.

Opening doc files (application/winword) with abiword fails completely:
type application/octet-stream is "discovered" - regardless of what i put in
mimeTypes. I have to point browser to application to use via filepicker each
time - then it opens OK, but all is forgotten till next time of course.
Target Milestone: mozilla0.9.1 → mozilla0.8
We're past time to cut these low priority bugs from mozilla0.8. Please update
these bugs today.
Tested with FreeBSD 4.1 20010131xx snapshot

Works now; properly starts xpdf. However, the you can't uncheck the box so that
you don't have to re-select xpdf every time you select a PDF file. Changing
summary to match partially-fixed behavior.

Reducing severity.
Severity: major → normal
Summary: "Open using" ignored for application/pdf (probably all types) → Open Using doesn't let you uncheck "always ask me" for PDF
Well, now this bug is similar to a few other bugs that I know exist in the
database. One is you can't uncheck the "always ask" checkbox (it's dimmed). Two
is that we should automagically add the mapping into the helper apps database
(probably the real reason behind number one). I would consider marking this a
dupe of one of those other bugs.
Marking as dup of 52454, which is bug about "always ask me" checkbox doesn't
work
