Sometimes people send huge email attachments containing Microsoft Word or Power point documents and these will occupy a lot less space if they are zipped. If Thunderbird automatically supports this, it will greatly reduce the amount of storage needed for backing up emails. If this is not possible for emails that are on the server, it should at least be possible for emails that are locally downloaded. AutoZip attachments supports zipping of attachments on Sent email though it does not work in TB 3.0+. However, that can be controlled to some extent as I can zip a document manually before attaching it to an email. Ideally, please see if we can support it for local downloaded emails and while sending in the Compose window. Thanks. Reproducible: Didn't try Steps to Reproduce: This is a feature request not a bug. Actual Results: N/a Expected Results: N/a

On sent it's bug 12865 For recived you can detach attachments and zip them - but that's a bit different.
Status: UNCONFIRMED → NEW
Component: General → Mail Window Front End
Depends on: 12865
Ever confirmed: true
QA Contact: general → front-end
Actually you should try the AttachmentExtractor add-in that allows to automatically detach incoming attachments. What might be more interesting is an option to NOT-save sent attachments, but only keep a link to the file location instead (similar to detaching) - this could have a very beneficial effect on the mailbox size without loosing any data (since it always has to exist somewhere within the senders reach)

Summary: Need ability to zip attachments on received and sent email → Need ability to zip attachments on received email
To clarify this request: I would like to keep the attachments in my mail but zip them **inside my IMAP folder** automatically So this functionality should: 1. detach the large attachment temporarily 2. zip it (or compress the image, music file,... accordingly) 3. re-attach it to the original email inside the IMAP folder
