this feature is available in comunicator 4.x [at least on linux and mac; oddly
absent in win32]. not sure how this would interact with the fix for bug 30453,
where browser.download.dir uses the last chosen download directory... in any
case, in 4.x the Applications pref panel had [near the bottom] a "Download files
to:" editable textfield as well as a Choose button next to it [brings up the
file picker for selecting directory].

Fixing bug 27493 would make this unnecessary.
