The command "Compact this folder" from the File menu doest not work at all. A deleted email gets the X-Mozilla-Status: 0009 but never disappears from Inbox file after sevelar hits of Compact this folder! This bug is an old one, because I've seen this problem today and have emails remaining in the Inbox file, deleted some months ago!
I'm pretty sure this is a dup of someone else's bug - not sure whose, though.

no, bug 63673 is for imap folders with the imap delete model set to imap delete, and I belive this is just for local mail folders.

When do you think you'll resolve this bug? My files are getting big! I guess for many people too...
I'm not able to reproduce this - you could try removing your Inbox.msf file, selecting your inbox, and then compacting it again, and see if that fixes the problem.

Look at that sample. It's a folder in by folders tree. I deleted the relative msf file and tried to compact it. Nothing is done. Always the same file. This is done with the latest build of mozilla.
yes, the problem happens for me too with that mbox file. I don't see anything obviously wrong with the mbox file - I'll look into it.

I've just attached the same file modified a bit - I've just deleted some emails from it and let 2. One is deleted, one is viewed. Try to compact it! (note: msf file has been deleted lots of time when doing the tries). Hope this will let you find that bug easily.
thanks, I see what's going on here, and I have a fix for it.
Attached patch part one of fix — — Splinter Review
so, the fix is to move the place we call NotifyStoreClosedAllHeaders from before the compaction starts to right before the compaction finishes. This is because NotifyStoreClosedAllHeaders clears out the msgHdr field of the nsIMessage, which makes part of the compaction process silently fail. If possible, I think this fix should go in 6.01, since I believe compacting local folders is broken in 6.0
This is marked as Windows 2000 but I'm getting it on Linux. Also I think it's probably a dupe of 60474.
yes, there's nothing platform specific about this bug. This is a dup of bug 60474, except that 60474 describes the one case that works. I'll mark 60474 a dup of this.

"Compact This Folder" works, but after that the selection is lost. The fix is not complete. 2001010820/Win98
that's always been that way in 6.0 - my fix has nothing to do with that other problem, which I agree is highly annoying.
I'm trying to add an attachment, but I can't. It's a Dr Watson log of a crash just after a Compaction. There's another bug that has just appeared after the fix - now, and randomly, after a compaction, the arrow that permits to expand a folder disappears! So, I become unable to selected subfolders anymore unless I re-launch Mozilla.

bug 66002 logged for crash.
I just got error 80470002 when accessing a folder after compating it. I'm using 2001020220 on Win2k. Is this the same bug or should I file a new bug?
I'm using 2001013010 and as far as I can tell "compact this folder" does nothing.

Validation on Solaris platform. Tried on Netscape6 commerical build (03/15/2001) on Sparc Solaris 2.7 (with max patch level) and x86 Solaris 2.8 (min. patch level). Tag used: [tag: -r Netscape_6_0_OEM_BRANCH -D "03/06/2001 22:00:00" PSM: 1.4 (PSM_1_4_N6) & NSS 3.1 (NSS_3_1_RTM tag) On opening particular folder and on clicking 'Compact this folder' option. It removes all the mails. But on quiting and re-invoking browser again, I still see those mails.
We know Compact folders is not working. We are working on it. The fix that was landed earlier was backed out.
