After installation of the Shockwave Flash plugin, mozilla doesn't start anymore,
it seems to hang on the registering of the plugin.

Reproducible: Sometimes
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install the Shockwave Flash plugin (from  
http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/flash/english/linux/4.0r12/flash_linux.tar.gz
)
2. for some time I'm able to start and use mozilla, and after that time, it
doesn't start any more, mozilla hangs in the startup, before opening a window.

Actual Results:  the text debug output when I try to run mozilla, and when it
doesn't start:

Does the same version of the plug-in work for you with Netscape 4.7* ?
And which version is it?
I don't see this bug on linux 20010113006, Shockwave Flash 4.0 r12

I could manually install the shockwave player (as the macromedia installer
couldn't see my mozilla install). Now, instead of showing the "Get plug-in"
window i saw before, moz just crashes on any site with shockwave. Not sure if
this is a mozilla problem, as I had to install manually etc. etc.

all i need to do to "install" flash in mozilla is 

cp /usr/lib/netscape/plugins/*lash* /usr/local/mozilla/plugins

Have you checked that permissions on these files are correct?
After startup: does mozilla see the flash plugin correct?
("about:plugins" in URL field)
And again.. does this version of the plugin actually work in NC4.7*?
(Asking, just in case you got hold of the wrong binary or something)

The plugin works fine with Netscape 4.76.

I also had to install manually (unzipping and untarring the file, and copy the
files ShockwaveFlash.class  and libflashplayer.so to the mozilla plugins/
directory. The plugin did not work when installed into my $HOME/.mozilla/plugins

The plugin is recognized correctly with about:plugins in the URL field (when
mozilla starts)

i noticed that flashplugin causes mozilla to freeze at startup when registering
plugins if it cannot open the audio device. for example when another program is
accessing the audio device, mozilla wont start before that program frees the
audio device. could this be the thing in your case too?
imho the flashplugin should be able to register and show flash-animations
without sound when audio device is not available. or perhaps use esound daemon
or something similar to allow several programs to use sound simultaneously.

Yes, Mozilla hangs when I'm playing music with mpg123, and when i stop the
music, mozilla works fine. I didn'd yet notice the correlation between music
playing and mozilla not working.

I couldn't get esound work properly together with mpg123 some time ago, so I
will quit the music before starting mozilla for the time being. Thanks for the
suggestion.

aha! Thanks. This is a dup of bug 58339 "Registering flash plugin while audio
device is active fails and completely stops browser"
