as mentioned in http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=69434 , the current themes scheme doesn't allow some UI parts to take on system colors, specifically those parts specified by .GIFs. While hardly a high priority, it does mean that the Classic skin ain't completely capable of emulating Netscape 4.X and that choosing a dark background color scheme in one's MS Windows preferences (e.g., High Contrast Black) can result in the Hotblack Desiato effect (black on black controls).

i looked but i don't find currently a way to change a colorvalue in a image through the xul (css), did i oversee something ?
The theme needs to be updated to use the Marlett (IIRC) font for these symbols instead of using graphics.

This seems to have been fixed in Phoenix 0.5 and Mozilla 1.3 alpha (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; WinNT4.0; en-US; rv:1.3a) Gecko/20021207 Phoenix/0.5, Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; WinNT4.0; en-US; rv:1.3a) Gecko/20021212) Thanks much to whomever did whatever! And if you follow the chain through 69434, you'll see it percolates back to a number of other bugs

(this is the original poster typing). I downloaded the latest Seamonkey nightly. Checkboxes and radio buttons were usable with a black background (that is to say, they were not black on black when selected). Not that I was expecting this to have re-regressed since Phoenix .5 or Mozilla 1.3. (My vague recollection of why I didn't resolve it in the first place was not having sufficient privileges to do so, back in 2003. I'll see what happens now.)
