Details

**** observed with 2001-03-28 build ****
Steps to reproduce:
- open Mail;
- go View|Folder character coding| on the second tab "Download" check the box
"select this folder for download";
- Ok the dlgbox, select a message in the thread;
//note: the font is changed to Italic
Well, what I'm seeing is that the messages which have bodies available for
offline reading change to italics in the thread pane, after going offline, those
without italics load the error text about that message not being available for
offline use.
I believe this is a newly introduced feature tweak for Offline. I've only seen
it mentioned briefly in the n.p.m.mail-news newsgroup, so I'll let David explain
if there's anything more to know about it, and if all's okay he can mark this
bug resolved accordingly.

this is on purpose - I need some way of knowing a message has been downloaded
for offline use. I'm waiting for icons from the UE group. When we get the icons
installed, then I can remove the italics.

ONe thing I noticed is that the italics never go away, even if the folder is no
longer selected for download (even after exit). I personally would think a
visual indication should only apply if the folder is offline applicable... if
that's correct, it's another issue to log.
no, the visual indicator indicates that we've downloaded the msg for offline
use. Changing the status of the folder does not change the fact that we've
downloaded the msg for offline use. 4.x worked this way as well. In fact, you
can download messages for offline use without ever selecting the folder for
offline use.
Italics never go away even after restart which is very annoying. When you go
back online the indicator that the folder was used off-line should go away.
please, the italics on the message indicate that the message has been downloaded
for offline use. It has nothing to do with whether the folder is marked for
offline use, except that reading a message in a folder marked for offine use
causes us to download the message for offline use. Other than that, they're
completely orthogonal.

Without ever touching the "select this folder for offline use" setting, you can
select a bunch of messages and select File | download selected for offline use,
and the messages will show up in italics - does this make sense?
Yeah, I get it. I'd temporarily forgotten about the download selected or
flagged messages. So once they're downloaded, it'll always show the visuals.
thanks, that helps to understand the issue.

If the entire folder is selected for offline use, will the folder name appear in
italics once its contents are downloaded? I would find this useful as a visual
indicator if I was working offline and didn't remember what folders I'd downloaded.
No, if you remember, the italics are purely a temporary measure until we get the
offline msg icon, at which point the italics will go away.
Any idea when those icons are coming? The italic font is totally illegible for
me and I've had to resort to going back to Communicator 4.77 in the meantime :-S
What's the bug number for the offline message icons?
Bug 67359 is the dowloaded icon bug
this seems to have been fixed when the new icons were checked in and added to
the .css.

Would really like to see this fix on the branch.
Keywords: nsBranch
Bug 86460 is similar to this bug. not sure if I should
dupe one of these bugs or keep them seperate.

Note:
Using 200107023 branch build, italics are still present.
Using 2001070208 trunk build, italics are gone.
This ISN'T FIXED! I just installed 0.9.2 on WinNT and I'm seeign exactly the
same behaviour.

Chris
it's not fix in .9.2 - it's fixed in the trunk mozilla builds. I don't know if
it's going to be fixed on the branch or not.
Commercial builds
2001-07-06-09-trunk/ win nt 4.0
2001-07-06-08-trunk/ linux 2.2, red hat 7.0
2001-07-06-08-trunk/ mac os 9.0.4

Noting that on Trunk builds there are No italic messages
in either modern or classic theme.

Not sure whether to mark as verified as I am not
sure this is going onto the branch or not (no nsbranch+
in status white board area) and because of the
possible dupe bug 86460)
Reopening bug for tracking so I can
resolve this as dupe of bug 86460
