to do:
1. whether or not i write a separate test plan for Helper Apps, i should have
cross-refs to the xp apps:gui plan and preferences plan.
2. for the test cases/outline page: definitely have cross-refs to the xp apps:
gui cases page [see also bug 68635], preferences test outline page, and the
downloading tests page [see alsobug 74617].
3. covers Preferences > Helper Apps stuff.
4. covers opening files with helper apps --prolly *not* plugin stuff, as that's
already covered by shrir's plan/tests.
thought: combine helper app and downloading ui test info?

initial checkin of the test outline is at
http://mozilla.org/quality/browser/front-end/testcases/xpapps-gui/saving-helperapp.html
warning: very rough draft.

stuff to update in the above page:
bug 97707 for Mac: setting for Open button shouldn't persist [no user-defined
mimetype && no OS-defined mimetype].
bug 97676 for Mac OS X: unable to launch/open app. period.
in no user-defined && no OS-defined section for Mac, add: can also test with
Word [.doc] or .bz2 files.
in no user-defined && no OS-defined section for Win32, add: can also test with
.bz2 files.
in no user-defined *with* pref panel/user-defined for Win32, add: can also test
with .bz2 files.
in no user-defined *with* pref panel/user-defined for Mac: fails due to bug 98296.
in no user-defined *with* advanced/user-defined for Win32, add: can also test
with .bz2 files.
in no user-defined *with* advanced/user-defined for Mac, add: can also test with
.pdf files.
in no user-defined *with* OS-defined for Linux: RealPlayer seems to work --try
.wav files? mebbe also .rm, .ram...
Download progress dialog buttons, ADD: Pause/Resume are only available for ftp
downloads. won't see 'em for http downloads, even if you go through the helper
app dialog.
Download progress dialog buttons, add to Mac section: bug 91871, where Reveal
Location and Launch File are broken on OS X.
Helper app, "always ask": ADD regression bug 93173. but, also remove the
reference to bug 88435, which is fixed.

upon further reflection...should prolly move the file from
http://mozilla.org/quality/browser/front-end/testcases/xpapps-gui/saving-helperapp.html
over into its own directory under quality/browser/front-end/testcases/...

since i decided to separate helper apps QA from downloading QA [bug 77820], this
doc will have a new location:
http://mozilla.org/quality/browser/front-end/testcases/file-handling/helper-apps.html
see bug 118845 for the downloading UI QA doc.

accepting QA for mozilla developer docs.
some of these bugs have been around for a _long_ time. Reporters, would you
please review the bugs, see if the issues have been resolved, and close bugs
appropriately.
I will do a full review of all bugs not touched in one week (8th April).
Thanks.

add the following bugs to "Issues" section:
bug 54940: adding OS-defined helper apps to prefs panel (as in 4.x); also see
bug 68514 and 68515 for using Internet Config for Mac OS to accomplish this.
bug 112180: long path displayed in helper app ("downloading") dlg results in
poor dlg display, as well as helper app pref panel badness.
bug 111035: remember user selection for "open using" radiobutton.

also, bug 132456, where the download manager opens when opening a file with a
helper app.
if possible, remove the download progress dlg stuff --that's more relevant to
general file downloading/saving.

Mac OS-only stuff, expected behavior:
* files opened by helper apps are NOT deleted and remain in default d/l folder.
* the d/l progress dlg which appears while file is being downloaded doesn't have
an option to keep it open when done.
