The mailnews FE window using the Modern skin contains a large envelope at the
far left hand side of the Mail Toolbar.
This envelope does absolutely nothing, except of course using up valuable screen
real-estate. It also gets in the way whenever a long-term user of
Mozilla/Netscape mail want to check for new messages.
Please remove it, or at least put it on the far right of the toolbar.

The attachment shows how my first virtual desktop normally looks. Note that the
browser overlaps the mailnews window by just enough to see my mailboxen and the
status thereof.
Note also how the envelope on the toolbar completly obscures all buttons from
view, making the toolbar useless.

"Netscape's nonbrowser applications, such as the Netscape Messenger e-mail
client, sport new icons on the left side of the main window toolbar. They're not
active buttons or clickable icons, they simply help you tell which application
you're in. For example, in Messenger, the icon is a little envelope--a nice touch
that we appreciate." - Cnet

I want to hear what cnet says after they've used the product for a few days.
Personally, I'm always mousing to the wrong location to find "save" (in
Composer), "send" in mail compose, or "get new messages" in mail. It is *quite*
annoying/frustrating. My motor memory is very strong.

We need to remember a lot of our customer base would have been
4.x users at some point, and they're gonna look for toolbars
to start from the left side, not the left side offset by the big icon.
Great idea, don't do it here. Use this icon for window/desktop icons.
Also, during 4.x we had terrible toolbar realestate issues,
we're using a lot of space here with no functionality.
We learned a lot during 4.x, let's not forget about all that
hard work.

I suggest adding a tooltip to this icon, and also to the non-functional icons
in the Composer and Address Book toolbars:
|
| This graphic does not do anything.
This wording has the advantage of being consistent with the tooltip for the
non-functional icon which is already listed in the User Interface Hall of Shame
<http://iarchitect.com/stupid.htm#STUPID33>.

Reopen because I believe this bug is still valid.
After all of these months, my muscle memory still takes me to the top left of the
toolbar for New and Open in Composer, Send in mail compose, and Get Messages in
Mail.
Are my muscles the only ones hardwired to these locations?

Marlon, if the UE Jihad won't fix this, please mark it won't fix.
I stand by my last comment, this is just a waste of space,
important space, probably the first icon the user will look at
when looking at the page for the first time.

here's why it's invalid: MARKETING. we are actually marketing a product here
folks. isn't it simply preposterous?? don't you wish we all had MBAs so we could
possibly fathom this mystical sorcery? it's witchcraft!!
This is non-trivial, it cannot simply be flipped around. a decision had to be
made between keeping mastheads or losing them all together.
Don't lose hope, there's light at the end of the tunnel for the masthead Jihad
and the 0.0005% of market we don't cater the default theme to - Toolbar
Customization, it's around the corner. in the mean time, user.css:
.toolbar-primary-icon {
visibility: collapse;
}

If Netscape wants this "feature" in their browser for important marketing
purposes; so be it, but if I submit a patch to remove this from Mozilla because
lots of people don't like it in here, then you'd have no reason to decline it.
Right?

right now, modern skin has those icons.
hewitt (the module owner for the modern skin) gets to make the call to keep them
or remove them.
given that you have a work around (user.css) and an alternative skin (classic)
with out these icons, we're not going to take a change to modern, unless hewitt
deems it so.
