Details

Since Netscape Navigator 4 (and probably an earlier version), pressing the
escape-key stops the animation of animated GIF's. Even Internet Explorer 4 and 5
(and 3?) behaves like this.

Since Mozilla 0.9 or 0.9.1, there is no such way to stop animations.

The ability to easily stop animations is important because while reading a web
page, animations can distract to user from focusing on the text, which obviously
is not a good thing.
