VERIFIED DUPLICATE of bug 65583

People

(Reporter: swhnld, Assigned: gagan)

Details

After installing build 0.9.1 (downloaded zip file).
Activiated proxy through socks (we do not use ftp, http etc, only socks).
Although this works through IE4< (tested on same system), it does not with
Mozilla.
So, or the app is not socksified (our socks server is standing somewhere remote
in the WAN, so I called AT&T about this for the operate it, it's their
suggestion). Or it cannot handle only socks to access the cruel outside world.

Maybe useful, normal FTP won't work from our network, we need to use passive
ftp.

This bug is about SOCKS proxy.
Reporter what version of SOCKS proxy are you using 4 or 5?
if you want SOCKS version 4, this would be a dup of bug 65583
otherwise please provide a testcase or steps to reproduce as mozilla should
support SOCKS version 5 currently
SOCKS v5 is also not always working (bug 74546)
As an aside, FTP does not support Active transfers (bug 465)

Lets get the vendor info on the SOCKS server if possible, we can figure out the
supported SOCKS versions with that info. You'll have to get this from your SOCKS
admin, there is no banner or transmitted vendor strings in SOCKS.
Changing summary
Summary: Proxy config won't work → Socks Proxy won't work
I do not know the version of the socks server. I don't have access to it.
This is not a winsock problem.
I called the provider, and their explanation was as follows: your application
needs to be socksified.
So for all internet traffic we use a proxy server, which is a socks server.
I can browse, download etc. through Internet Explorer 4, 5, 5.5. When updating
my NAV Enterprise 7, I have to use passive FTP! Normal FTP won't work.
The computers currently are running W98SE with IE5.5, 128bit encrypt.
I am guessing 65583. Either way its a dupe.

_basic, can you help swhnld figure out which one it is?

Nobody has marketing data on the proportion of SOCKS V4 to SOCKS V5 servers (not
even NEC!), so this data would be useful.
The reporter says that he is no longer using moz on his system and is no longer
able to do more testing on this bug (for now at least). Since he mentions IE4
for Win32, I assume that he is using a socks 4 proxy. Reporter, please reopen
this bug if you find that you are not using socks 4 proxy (i.e. using socks 5)
and mozilla still doesn't work with it.
