From Bugzilla Helper:
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:0.9.1) Gecko/20010607
BuildID: 2001060703
I just started using Mozilla, and it automatically imported all my bookmarks
from Netscape and IE, but when I click the bookmarks icon or anytime the
booksmarks are displayed really everything slows down to the point where you
can't do anything. I probably have at least a couple thousand bookmarks. Just
displaying the quick bookmarks menu is slow, and going into the bookmarks
manager and trying to select hundreds of bookmarks at once to cut and paste them
into a folder doesn't even seem to work. Scrolling the list is also very slow.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Import thousands of bookmarks
2.Click "bookmarks"
3.

out of curiosity, how big is your bookmarks file, in Kb?

Sorry, should've asked all at one time. What machine and processor?
I'm trying to see if I can setup a similar config and see just how slow.
When pulling down the toplevel menu is it just extremely slow the first time or
every time. Is theer any appreciable speed up? (the 1st time is always a little
slow - it's supposed to get better after that).
Celeron 433, 128 megs of ram. Not sure what you mean by "machine" it's not a
Compaq or anything I built it from scratch.
Well I just did a test, and pulling down the bookmarks menu takes approximately
3-4 seconds the first time I click it, and I'd say a quarter of a second after
that. But even a quarter of a second feels sluggish. Netscape 4.76 on the
other hand brings up the bookmarks menu instantly. COme to think of it all of
the menus in mozilla are kinda sluggish. The Netscape ones pop up instantly,
but the mozilla ones seem to take a moment. If I move my mouse across the menus
in Netscape, they all open and close really fast, but in Mozilla, some of them
don't even get a chance to open because they take longer than it take the mouse
cursor to move across them to open.
Now as for when I manage the bookmarks... it takes consistently around 3 seconds
to open, and then resizing the window takes one second to occur, and when I move
the scrollbar it takes the window one second to update each time I move it.
Scroling down one item at a time with the arrow buttons on the scrollbar seems
to work okay, but clicking on the scrollbar to move it down one big step at a
time is as sluggish as moving the scrollbar by dragging it. This makes it
really difficult to edit my bookmarks.
Btw, am I correct in assuming that Mozilla is just using the bookmarks file
which is still in my netscape directory? Cause I coudln't find a bookmarks file
in the mozilla directory.

confirming. Yes the menu is sluggish. With 867k of bookmarks on a 433 Celeron
though I don't think that's a surprise to anyone. It's a very general problem.
Waterson, are we tracking (with bugs) bookmarks/XPMenu performance anywhere?
sswift, mozilla migrates your 4.x profile and creates a new one and then no
longer touches your 4.x profile. Your bookmarks are in C:\windows\Application
Data\Mozilla\Profiles\<profilename>\<obscure foldername.slt>\bookmarks.html

Can somebody slap a big bookmarks file in here? I'll profile it.

attached is the BM file i was using in performance testing (I believe) it's
hideous with a lot of nesting. Linked inthe url field is my 'offical' big
bookmarks file. It's simply large but a much more 'regular' pattern of nested
folders.

This bug looks to be about the bookmarks menu; bug 62907 appears to be specific
to the bookmarks window (which may be improved when Ben does his rdfliner stuff).

I'm futuring this bug because I'm not going to get to it before mozilla-1.0.

I'm pretty sure this is a duplicate of bug 62907.
