In a current nightly (I used 2001070808) Mozilla, go to: ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/netscape6/english/6.1_PR1/windows/win32/xpi and click on spellchk.xpi It downloads the file and automatically installs it. After closing Mozilla and restarting, you get presented with this error: "The procedure entry point ?GetUnicode@nsString@@QBEPBGXZ could not be located in the dynamic link library xpcom.dll This is with the current Win32 nightly, build# 2001070808, Win2K SP1. Moz 0.9.2 does not exhibit this problem.
I don't think that XPI file is even supposed to work with Mozilla. At least you can't require it.
hwaara is right, this is not supported. it's a Netscape only (not mozilla) feature.

Reopening. The ability to use the XPI file died on the 0.9.2 branch over the weekend (between the morning builds of 07/07 and 07/09. This seems to be a real problem as this is supposed to be the basis of the next Netscape release. The xpi installs but is not usable (neither the menu icon nor keyboard shortcut works). It seems the xpi does not load. Maybe it is still not our (Mozilla's) problem but I'm reopening it to let you decide on it.

Summary: spellchk.xpi not working on current nightly → spellchk.xpi not working on current nightly (both trunk and 0.9.2 branch)
If it's a netscape bug. Don't report it here. Report it to bugscape. Again, this is not a supported (mozilla anyway) feature.
wontfix. again, mozilla doesn't support netscape's spellchk.xpi if it works, that's great. but it is unsupported, so if it doesn't, you're on your own. there is no way for anyone in mozilla to make it work, and netscape has no interest in going out of there way to make it work for mozilla users. (since it is a netscape only feature.)

to elaborate why it is a netscape only feature, the spell checker contains code that is proprietary (3rd party) and can't be open sourced by netscape. going forward, the solution for mozilla would be to implement their own spell checker.
vrfy. fwiw we also don't support third party themes (esp ones that were designed for older versions of mozilla). as one of the many people working on a mozilla spellchecker implementation: blah. [fwiw this is tracked in other bugs, and we're accepting patches]

*** Bug 96962 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
Could it be possible to make mozilla backward compatible with xpi for mozilla 0.9.2 or 0.9.2.1. At least spellchecker works with mozilla 0.9.2
