JavaScript window.close() refuses to close a window not opened through JS, as a kind of security
measure. This is a problem for Mozilla, whose basic world is more intimately run by JS.  I've been
told that this simple security model will soon be replaced by a more capable one, and the check
can simply be removed for now.
