If the solution regarding editing the session.json file seems too daunting :
Help > More Troubleshooting Information
Under 'Application Basics' - half way locate 'Profile Folder' - click on 'Open Folder'
Window opens showing contents of profile name folder.
Exit Thunderbird now.
Delete the 'session.json' file
Start Thunderbird.
Report on results.
