Creating a new page with the same slug that a now-deleted page occupies works, and it shouldn't

What did you do?
================
1. Created a sub page using the "New sub-page" button with a slug that already has been used, but the page has since been deleted
2. Put some content in it
3. Tried to save it
What happened?
==============
It gave me a 500 server error
What should have happened?
==========================
It probably shouldn't have let me create the sub page in the first place. Perhaps it should detect that the slug was already used, and then ask if I want to undelete and then modify the page?
Is there anything else we should know?
