User taps browser app and goes to URL that loads very slowly (nydailynews.com, mlb.com, tvguide.com). As the web page struggles to load, the battery percentage in Settings decreases at rate of 1-1.5% per minute.

Prerequisites:
Have an active internet connection and clear browsing history and clear cookies and stored data

Repro Steps:
1) Updated Tarako to BuildID: 20140429014002
2) Tap Browser App
3) Navigate to a website URL that has intense graphics and/or takes long to load (i.e. nydailynews.com)
4) While the page is loading, tap homescreen button and tap Settings
5) Observe the battery percentage
6) Repeat steps 4 and 5 every minute or so

Actual:
Battery percentage decreases at rate of 1 percent per minute

Expected:
Battery percentage decreases at rate 1 percent every 3-5 minutes

Notes:
Repro frequency: 10/10 – 100 percent for nydailynews.com

Other: Tested with Data Connection only, Wifi not available using this Tarako build.

This issue does reproduce on 1.3 Buri. Following the STR in Comment 0, battery life decreased for nydailynews.com by 3 percent in under a minute.

So it's common issue, not tarako only?
Flags: needinfo?(james.zhang)
Yes, it looks like a common issue. We'll need to investigate that for b2g in general I think?
I'll test this with my battery harness tomorrow, and see how it shows up.
So I'm seeing a spike in power usage from normal idle current to about 60% higher, every minute, for 10-20 seconds, with the browser in the background on nydailynews.com. This is on a Tarako, running latest nightly engineering build (1.3T).

Not blocking on this as this is reproducible in other branches as well and not tarako specific.
blocking-b2g: 1.3T? → -
This issue is reproducible on 1.4 Flame. Navigating to the website nydailynews.com with a low battery (12%) caused a battery slip to 10 percent in less than 1 minute.

Environmental Variables:
Device: Flame 1.4 MOZ
BuildID: 20140515000202

I think this should be investigated to see how much we can reduce in power consumption.

Until someone actually starts working on this, I'm going to reduce it to a P2

Could it be the rendering of the loading animated GIF that is draining power so quickly? We have optimised this in the past for CPU usage though and the GIF hasn't been updated for 2 years (except to add larger versions).
