Details
I use Mozilla 0.9.4 (Build ID 2001091311) as my Mail-/Newsreader. Contrary to
the last milestone from August, I found the bug that the mailer/newsreader
indicates all the time that it's reloading information from the server although
it actually does not.
Reporter, I use 0.9.4, and don't experience this problem unless the server is taking a long
time to respond.
Please provide detailed instructions on how you reproduce this problem.
Click either on Inbox, then GetMsg, or choose a newsgroup and read some
postings. Sometimes, the error does not appear immediately; then continue to
read news or mails.
First, the message "Connect: Host contacted, sending login information" occurs.
After that, I get the message "There are no new messages on the server.", but
Mozilla seems still to contact the server all the time.
I don't think that this is a server problem since this error did not occur while
I was using Mozilla 0.9.3, up to last Monday, with the same preferences and
server settings.
I created a Test profile, only for Newsgroups - no mail account. Up to now, no
such error occurs. At latest Monday, I will create a new profile for another
person here in our group. I will report again whether the error occurs or not.
I had Mozilla 0.9.3 installed with my profile while running the Mozilla 0.9.4
installer that just overwrote old Mozilla 0.9.3 files. What must I do in future
to avoid this error that I described in this bug? How can I get my old mails
from my buggy account?
Reporter, in answer to your questions,
1) What must I do in future to avoid this error that I described in this bug?
As it's uncertain what causes you this error, I cannot say.
2) How can I get my old mails from my buggy account?
It would be best for you to as on [news:netscape.public.mozilla.mail-news] how to merge
e-mail from one Mozilla profile to another. This isn't the appropriate place to ask.
I can reproduce this also for the new Mozilla 0.9.5 version, after installation
of that into the same folder that either Mozilla 0.9.4 or Mozilla 0.9.3 were
using before. I have reproduced that on several Macs (G3 beige or green, IMac
also) with several OS versions from 8.6 to 9.2.1.
Having a mail account, start Mozilla 0.9.5 and read your mails in Inbox. Perhaps
you need to click on GetMsg once to see the bug. In the Newsgroups, you need to
open a thread and click on some "deeper" messages.
I asked for an advice in the German webbrowser newsgroup. They have in their FAQ
about Netscape6.x (not sure if for Mozilla also, but doesn't matter) that it's
highly recommended to install a new version into a new folder and then copy the
mails and news into the new location, following by deleting the old folder.
mg8, you should not be installing new Mozilla versions into the same folder the old
version used. Always install new Mozilla versions into their own, new, folders.
Please try testing again using this method.
mg8, please address my Additional Comment #8 on this bug. Also retest using 0.9.6.

With the current version 0.9.8 (build ID 2002020405), the bug doesn't seem to
appear anymore. I will let you know when it happens to me again.
