For us and contributors once we have something that can provision a vm and provide a turn-key dev environment we also want to be able to automate updates so that it's easy for someone to update the development environment to the latest and greatest code and deps. We have some Makefiles in some projects that do this so adding that kind of thing consistently to every project would be a good place to start.
