From Bugzilla Helper: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:0.9.4+) Gecko/20010925 BuildID: 20040925 In the address book, the word "Cellular" is used. Isn't it more adequate to use "Portable", or even better, "Mobile" instead? As I understand it, cellular phone, produced at the end of the 80's, could only receive calls but not send calls. Reproducible: Always
my cell phone has types: Home, Work, Fax, General, Mobile. It only bothered me for the first 5secs that i looked through the list, after that i was fine w/ it. Especially since there was a nice icon next to it :-)

I believe this is a one-side-of-the-Atlantic-vs-the-other issue, such as: * elevator / lift * apartment / flat * french fries / chips That is, neither is "right" or "wrong", but they just differ per locale. Most Americans refer to their portable phones as "cell phones", even if they're not technically using cell technology. For my 2 cents, as an American, "mobile" is fine with me.
"Mobile" is fine with me too if that is a more universal term.
"Mobile" sounds fine with me too.
I'm from the UK (you may have noticed that my email address is a clever combination of my first name, last name and country of birth - some other Alex Bishop beat me to alexbishop) and the terms 'cellular phone' and 'cell phone' are used here but they do sound rather American. I've never heard them described as 'portable phones' before so I prefer 'mobile'. <QA Ignore> Alex "Rembrandt" Bischoff: the terms 'French fries' and 'chips' do have slightly different usages here: 'French fries' describes the thinner American- style variety (as served in fast food restaurants), while 'chips' describes the thicker variety (as served by fish and chip shops). However, the term 'chips' is sometimes used to describe French fries, but the term 'French fries' is rarely used to describe chips. Not that it matters or has any relevance on this bug... </QA Ignore>
> I believe this is a one-side-of-the-Atlantic-vs-the-other issue, No, it isn't such issue. Even if it is, it would have been USA-vs-the-rest-of-the-world issue. There's the term "mobile application" (eg WAP). But have you heard "cellular application"? I don't think so.
The term "Mobile" is fine with me.

Comment on attachment 54989 [details] [diff] [review] patch, v1 sr=sspitzer keep in mind, this string appears in the en-US builds. there are other language packs for en-GB, for the other side of the atlantic. if you still want the change from Cellular to Mobile, sr=sspitzer. if you want the en-US version to be different than the en-GB version, you could file the bug on l10n team.

Don't worry about other locales; localization team will take care of that.
Sorry for the spam, but I had to add my experience on this one: A few years back I had arrived in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, to do a few weeks worth of work on a satellite system installation for Aramco. I needed to rent a cell phone for local use, and the hotel clerk gave me a number of a local business to call. So I call the guy. His English is halting, but it's good enough. I tell him I want a cell phone. He seems confused. I tell him again, slowly and clearly. that I want to "rent a cell phone". I try "pay money for a cell phone". He is still confused and replying with very strange queries. This went on for minutes. I was practically screaming at the poor guy. Finally I realized that he thought I wanted to "sell phone". Sell him my phone? Become a phone salesman? Who knows. That was June 1997 -- I've used "mobile phone" ever since. Causes some strange looks from Americans sometimes, but at least I get the data across the interface ... [my first Bugzilla comment ever -- hopefully I don't screw anything up :) ]
Should this not be a localisation "localization" issue and applied in the relevant locale settings? Here in New Zealand the words "Mobile", "Cellphone" and "Cellular" are used interchangeably, but it is more common to see "Mobile" used in various advertising and at the end of emails. If we were looking for the word for "Mobile" in Rural NZ terms it would probably be "Brick", given that most of the rurals have the old "Bricks" version of mobiles. ;-)
from the patch: RCS file: /cvsroot/mozilla/mailnews/addrbook/resources/locale/en-US/abCardOverlay.dtd,v This change was indeed only for the US English localization. vrfy fixed r1.7 (enUS) http://bonsai.mozilla.org/cvsblame.cgi?file=mozilla/mailnews/addrbook/resources/locale/en-US/abCardOverlay.dtd&rev=1.7&mark=40#40

Hi timeless@mac.com, could you do one more patch? Just a small one. Open the address book, in the right bottom panel, "Card for XXX XXX XXX", and within the Phone section, the word cellular is still there. Please change it to Mobile too. Thanks a lot.
/mailnews/addrbook/resources/locale/en-US/addressBook.properties, line 43 -- propertyCellular=Cellular /mailnews/addrbook/resources/locale/en-US/abResultsPaneOverlay.dtd, line 38 -- <!ENTITY CellularNumber.label "Cellular"> do we want to change both of these? i'd imagine so.

moving to future as a bug that racham owns. timeless, since it looks like you have the patch, you can take this and move it to another milestone (I assume 0.9.7 since I doubt 0.9.6 would be held for this).
