I haven't been able to find out where this comes from, but from the few reports I've been able to find, on SUMO and elsewhere, people have been infected by it unknowingly, and it changes the new tab page to include a search box using the speedial.com Yahoo affiliate search engine. It's also incredibly new and yet has millions of users, which is highly suspicious.

Also ffxtlbr@speedial.com
Note that these add-ons have an extremely high correlation with searches moving to a non-default search engine in the day after install.

It seems to be, yes. This installer hijacks the default search engine and homepage before install, but does not bypass about:newaddon, but stats suggest that that's not the usual method of install.
