Currently, there is no status bar notification icon to indicate that there is a SMS or MMS that has yet to be read/received.

I know this duplicates in some instances the information on the lock screen and notifications panel, but it can still be really informative to have it there at a quick glance (especially if the user is in an app while SMS/MMS are inbound).

For instance, I have an MMS that is waiting to download, and without going into the Messages app, I would never have known this was the case since the Notifications Panel and Lock Screen don't show me this.

If we had a SMS/MMS Waiting Status indicator icon I'd have known that the MMS was waiting to download.
The behavior we should have is:

1. either the MMS is automatically downloaded, and you have no notification until it is actually downloaded
2. or the MMS is not automatically downloaded, and then you have a notification as soon as the MMS comes in

What I don't know/remember is what happens in case 1 if the MMS download fails. Is it the case you see?

Julien,

The case I was experiencing last night was that the MMS could not download because I had my WiFi connection active (which causes MMS send/retrieve to fail).

I had happened to open the Messages app and saw that I had a pending retrieve, but there was no indication anywhere else in the System UI to let me know this was the case. If I had not checked blindly, I likely would not have retrieved the MMS for a long time.

Can you share which Firefox OS version you use?

The WiFi issue is another issue that I'm quite sad about. I'll ask the RIL peers once I know the version you use.

I'll check how the error status work, I think I can try to trigger it on my side.

Currently, I'm up to date on the master compiles for the ZTE Open/Inari.

Last version I used was v2.1 2014-06-30 17:50:25.

Bevis, do we still have a known issue with MMS and WiFi?

(keeping NI for the check for the error condition)

It seems to be the issue in Bug 1032064.

Julien, I no longer seem to have the WiFi/MMS problem on v2.1 2014-07-02 build, but I'd still like to have a MMS/SMS download/waiting icon in the status bar if possible :)
Oleg will try to reproduce the error condition since I'm quite overloaded right now

Gecko patch should be landed on the latest build, and I couldn't reproduce it either.

For the error case , we diplay "Message not downloaded" just like manual retrieval mode. Maybe we could refine this part in the future. But if you set auto retrieval mode, you will receive notification only when message downloaded(if there is no error occured). So do you prefer a notification for message downloading in mms auto retrieval mode?

I think the reporter would like this, but we need to ask UX. I'm not sure we want this, but maybe yes. (a so useful comment :) )

Have you checked that it worked correctly?

Yeah, I also can confirm that notification is correct (Message is not downloaded). Once connection was fixed I was able to retrieve MMS successfully (via Download button) (and got notification once it was downloaded).

Yes! It can be very helpful to see when one is coming in (if it is retrieving correctly), and can direct you to troubleshoot problems if need be. Like I said above, I'd never have known that I had a message waiting for retrieval if I had not checked the Messages app out of habit.

I'd definitely like a MMS retrieval icon in the status bar for sure, and perhaps a lock-screen notification if it fails/is waiting when you check the lock screen.
