Currently following a hyperlink from an email opens the URL in a window overlayed over the email app which has no navigation controls.
I'd like to suggest that rather than do this, the email app open those links in a tab in the browser app (and in future a browser window) by spawning a view URL web activity.
The overlayed windows currently being used can leave the user stranded with no back button and they exhibit problems with APZC where they sometimes can't be zoomed or scrolled.
In future we might support window.open better via the system browser and open resources in a browser window outside of the app, but for now a web activity is the best bet. I'd like to propose this be applied for 2.0.

:asuth filed bug 1024856 with some more background. That bug also suggests that 2.0+ is desirable.
