As a user, I want the AM/PM indicator in the status bar to be displayed independent of the time so that more room can be used in the status bar if needed. Acceptance Criteria: 1. The AM/PM indicator in the status bar is shown as described by the priority in the UX spec, independent of the time.
Rob, can you add the priority of the AM/PM indicator to the spec for bug 1042105?
On my list. I should be able to update the spec on July 31. How do we feel about removing it entirely? It seems odd to only display it part of the time. (No pun intended!)

I don't have strong feelings about keeping it. If I look at my phone, see "4:30", and don't know whether it's 4:30 AM or 4:30 PM, well I have bigger problems than my phone not telling me the time.
Created attachment 8479483 [details] [review] Github pull request I had a pretty hip digital watch when I was a kid and it never had AM/PM. Adding Michael for review, and Francesco for feedback from the l10n point of view.
Adding the larger l10n community in case someone has a strong opinion on this. Also asking Peter, since Chinese could be an edge case (they localize am/pm, and place it before the time). For what it's worth I noticed that my Android tablet doesn't display AM/PM in 12-hours format, at least in the status bar. About the patch: please add a comment explaining why the string doesn't have %p (i.e. it's used only in the status bar, and it's shorter to gain spaces for icons). An alternative solution could be to keep the logic and just use tinyTimeFormat12 as time format instead of shortTimeFormat12

(In reply to Francesco Lodolo [:flod] from comment #5) > Adding the larger l10n community in case someone has a strong opinion on > this. Also asking Peter, since Chinese could be an edge case (they localize > am/pm, and place it before the time). Ignoring AM/PM indicator is fine to me personally, but I'm not sure if the market would accept it. I don't think there's any device or digital watch that don't have the indicator in Taiwan. However, I don't know why people accept analog watches without indicator, probably simply no one did it before? :p
Just caught up a scenario that needs indicator: If I just had a long-haul flight, I might want to know is the local time 4:30 am/pm quickly and easily?
MacOS separates two options: * Use a 24-hour clock * Show AM/PM
(In reply to Zibi Braniecki [:gandalf] from comment #9) > MacOS separates two options: > > * Use a 24-hour clock > * Show AM/PM +1 the user should be able to choose.
(In reply to Peter Pin-Guang Chen [:petercpg] (MozTW.org) from comment #8) > Just caught up a scenario that needs indicator: If I just had a long-haul > flight, I might want to know is the local time 4:30 am/pm quickly and easily? FWIW long-haul flights are definitely an edge-case given our target market. If we are looking to Apple for inspiration, then also bear in mind that adding choice for the minority adds complexity for everyone. KISS says remove the choice.
For reference, this has been discussed in bug 903683 comment 74 and later, with a decision from UX in bug 903683 comment 85: > […] I don't think it's necessary to further provide option for user to > decide whether or not to show AM/PM, as the current UI is already filled > with options. Tks!
Great discussion everyone. The rationale for removing the AM/PM indicator is it gives us more space to display other indicators that are more helpful / higher priority to the user. Based on the threads and other feedback so far it doesn't seem like we're breaking any critical use cases by not showing it. The setting isn't intended to be a user option and, as mentioned in comment 12, ux would like to avoid overwhelming the settings app. Instead, the setting is meant to be an option for partners or for mozilla to easily restore am/pm in the event there is a use case or requirement that we've missed.
Closing this based on https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1057977#c7. The work for removing AM/PM will be done in 1057977.
