Having been using get satisfaction for a number of years, one of the appealing things there is the ability to log into the site using multiple web credentials. Offering users the ability to log in NOW using their existing Facebook, Google, Yahoo, Twitter, Microsoft or openId far better meets the expectations of the user that the current system which requires a Mozilla support login.
While I am filing this bug for support.Mozilla.org I think it is time Mozilla as an organisation came to grips with user/contributor authentication and fixed the issue. Currently I have an MDN, an AMO, A SUMO and a persona sign in to Mozillians. Surely this mess of separate sign-ons can be turned into something less unwieldy and easier to navigate.
From the user/customer perspective they do not need or want a mozilla support account. They want to ask questions and get support. Let them use their existing credentials. Create a profile based on that and email them a reminder to log into SUMO using their "whatever service" credentials in future. The only problem with it on get satisfaction was people logging in once with about three sets of credentials and then being unable to find their old questions..

There was an experiment with Persona. That's no longer the case. I'm not sure if SUMO wants to implement these types of things.

We tried to switch to Persona. We looked into Firefox Accounts.
We don't have the ability to support multiple authentication providers. I don't think we should support any of the suggested providers as our *only* authentication method. Changing SUMO to support multiple authentication methods is a project that I think is too large.
I'm going to close this as WONTFIX. In a perfect world I'd love to have federated authentication, but technical and time limits prevent us from doing it in SUMO.
