First, we need some code that checks whether flat-volume is enabled on the server, and if it is (on most distros, but not Ubuntu), revert to doing our own soft volume manually. If it isn't, we can simply keep doing what we are doing. Then, this issue has started some discussion on the PulseAudio mailing list [0], and I'm confident that a brilliant solution will be implemented. We will switch to using it when it's ready and shipped. Obviously we will have to support both the old and new method, but I'm sure checking the PulseAudio version at run time is trivial. This bug is about doing the first part. [0]: http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/pulseaudio-discuss/2014-August/021082.html
