Attached file Sample of Firefox.txt
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.9; rv:32.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/32.0 (Beta/Release)
Build ID: 20140818191513

Steps to reproduce:

Play music on Soundcloud

Actual results:

Music plays fine, but CPU is spinning between 60 and 120%.

Expected results:

Usage stays reasonable.
Apologies, I should have said that it was a clean profile. I haven't tried safe mode yet.
I'm guessing the sample is from the OS X tools (instruments or the activity monitor). However, it doesn't have symbols so it's very hard to see what's going on.

Could you try getting a profile with the gecko profiler add-on instead? See: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Performance/Reporting_a_Performance_Problem .
Ok, I think that I captured a trace:

Let me know if you need more info. The Nightly build seems to have the issue a little less. I can run another trace using the Beta if that helps.

Hi,

I have tested this On Mac OS X 10.10 with FF Nightly 46.0a1 and I can't reproduce this issue. CPU is spinning between 9% and 38%.
Jonathan do you still have this problem? If yes please follow the link given by Gijs: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Performance/Reporting_a_Performance_Problem

I will see if it still repros on my Mac. Thanks for following up!
I see spikes of up to 35% CPU, which still seems elevated for audio playback, but evidently not the end of the world.

We looked at this during regression triage today and wondered if anyone could post a more recent performance profile? (Assuming there is still a perf issue)

I retested this on Mac OS X 10.10 with FF Nightly 55.0a1(2017-03-13) using the steps from the description. I made a cleopatra profile(https://perfht.ml/2mHiWX7), maybe it is useful. I also attached a print screen with the CPU consumption, please note that this CPU percentages were recorded just for ~2 seconds and after that, the CPU dropped to around ~15-30%.

Jonathan do you have any updates about this?

Feel free to contact if you think I can help in any other way. Thanks

I haven't used SoundCloud in over a year, and cannot comment on this right now :( I'll try to regress it soon.

I'm still seeing massive CPU use when SoundCloud is open. It can be paused, not even playing music and the tab is still using a lot of energy.

Mac OSX 10.13.6
FF 68.0.2

Happy to record diagnostic info if given sufficient instructions.

Severity: normal → S3

Given this bug is attracting junk comments, and we never got to the bottom of a root cause here, going to close this as incomplete. If there are still performance issues on soundcloud, we could potentially reopen, but perhaps a new bug would be more appropriate after all this time.
