Select Arabic language in Settings. Observe that the calendar is Gregorian Civil. Expected: When the device is activated in Arabic locales, the calendar should default to Arabic civil. When the language is set to Arabic, the user may want a Gregorian calendar (as, for example, an Arabic speaker living or working in the U.S. may prefer) but should be able to choose from the Arabic civil or Arabic Islamic calendars (in a sort of setting). Information about these calendars can be obtained through ICU (International Component for Unicode). We believe ICU is already being used as part of Android. We'll need UX specs and visual design for both new calendars on Firefox OS, to ensure they fit patterns, etc. Adding Juwei and Peko to CC: because we will need Calendar design/adaptation for this for 2.2.
Clarifying that, for 2.2, we'll focus on Arabic Civil calendar.
ICAL doesn't support non-Gregorian calendars yet (in general).
There is standardization work being done there, but I doubt that providers like Google / Yahoo / Apple will have support by 2.2 timeframe.
Thanks Gareth - really helpful. We were hoping to get most of this from the ICU library, but that work dropped when the 2.2 scope changed. Maybe you, Ahmed, Dylan and I can get together to talk through everything we'll need to support this? Thanks!
