I suspect it's because we/I never fixed the script to pull the new code from c-c instead of hg.instantbird.org/instantbird/.
I fixed updating the en-US repo for changes in comm-central a few months ago. I'm not resolving this bug now because I don't remember if I had verified at the time that updates of the website and updates of the purple add-on work (although I think they do).

Instantbird isn't being updated so I think this is overcome by events. :)
