I'm separating the follow-up work on making group displays in the UI, to ease tracking of bug 858337 for historical purposes.

How does this relate to bug 1146099, comment #2?
There are two RFC2047 decoders at work. The new JSMime implementation and an old C++ implementation in comm-central/mozilla/netwerk/mime.
The old one is used for the message header display in the message pane.
