Details
We're not really localizing gecko underneath gaia anyway, let's rip that out completely, and make sure we're not breaking too much.
Which leads me to the question, what do we break?
Things that come to mind from Android are html form elements, net error pages, master password, a11y, RTL, accept-lang defaults, telemetry, crashes.
http://mxr.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/source/mobile/android/locales/jar.mn#43 has the files we need for Android, which is likely a superset of what we might still pick up, or wanted to pick up if we'd not do this.
But then we should actually ship gecko localizations.
Vivien, we talked about this briefly a while ago. Can you recommend someone to help that has a thorough understanding of gaia and can triage the list we have on Android?

There are at least some in-content strings (like the file input button `Browse...`) that could be hard to move to gaia - but no impossible.

Redirecting this to James, we had a hallway conversation and he wanted to do this.

[Blocking Requested - why for this release]:
Seems like this bug didn't get any traction yet. Nominating to get this up on the radar for upcoming releases.

I feel like someone like gandalf who knows both l10n & gaia could help with figuring out the answer to Pike's question in comment #0.
