Steps to reproduce:

Step 1: Have PDF-XChange 2.5 or Reader XI already setup as the PDF handler in Windows 7 64-bit Pro.
Step 2: Install Firefox 31



Actual results:

Firefox registers itself as the PDF handler and sets PDF files as firefox type.


Expected results:

It should have properly detected in the registery that PDF files already had a handler and therefore should not have registered itself as a handler.

There are several mozilla forum reports about this happening. The official response given to all of them is "This can happen if there is no default application that handles PDF files." However, clearly this is not the answer, because every mozilla forum report of this issue did already have a default application registered to handle PDF files. Here are a few links.

The workaround given in these reports is correct. However, the answer is wrong, as the moderators continue to ascertain that this happened because "none such application is already registered." when that is clearly incorrect in all cases. Everyone had a PDF handler registered at the time of installing Firefox (including myself), and firefox still registered itself as the handler.

Pretty sure it's already reported. Did you make a search before filing that bug?

Yes, there are no other search results for "pdf handler" or "register pdf" except for my bug report. I just checked again.

The bugzilla system returns a list of all similar bugs when I enter the title before it goes to the bug report screen, and there were no similar bugs listed there either.

I remember a similar bug has been fixed 2 or 3 weeks ago, it was about PDF handling but I fail to retrieve the bug report.
