Steps to reproduce:
Performed a daily update to nightly build 35.0a1 on OSX 10.8.5.
Actual results:
After restarting to update nightly, now get the message "Nightly being update by another instance". When a new update is available, the message changes to a button "Restart to Update Nightly", but when clicked nothing happens.
Had to download from the FTP site to perform update.
I've performed a restart with add-on disabled, clean install, created a new profile, and checked for the update folder, all to no avail. The message is still there in the about box.
Expected results:
Updated to a new version.

Thank you for the very detailed bug report but this has been already reported in bug 1068384
