If you don't have many pictures for your contacts, the repetition of letters feels "heavy". See attached screenshot (contact names removed).
Sabrina, Carol: Can we do something for this case?

Hi Anthony,
The "Alphabet" is necessary if we have the circle for the missing photo.
It doesn't make sense to have only circles.

I had a offline discussion with Carrie and Fang, we would like to have a overall improvement for the missing contact images and missing caller photo (in dialer).
We will consider this situation into our new design, thank you!

Many users come from feature phones. They won't have many pictures in the contact lists they import. So this gives a bad first (or perhaps second) impression. Please change the image for missing contact.

this is by design so we have no plans to change it in 2.1 - we need UX input here as to what we can do to improve the situation. We will not block the 2.1 release on this specific item. if this is fixed then ask for approval for uplift.

I was told that the default image can be disabled by a pref or conf property. Francisco, is that feature available?

Maybe it can be good enough for what Olof is requesting

Yes, can be configured in build time.

Thanks!
I've removed the [Tako_Blocker] flag.
As long as it configurable it can be handled in 2.1

I'm a freelance contractor and created this solution which visual agreed was a good solution for the time being. I'm not sure what's wrong with it aesthetically, but I'm not offended if it's revisited.

I won't be working here as of end of December/January as my contract is up, so I'm clearing my info request. Perhaps Carol or another visual designer can work with you guys to find a better solution.
