I'm currently testing MS Entourage for Mac OS X (from MS Office v.X) and it has
a sweet feature: you can assign a message to a category (not a folder or
anything) and each category carries a unique (user-defined) color. You can use
a default set of categories (work, family, friends, high priority, etc.) and you
can add your own categories. The custom views are quite powerful - you create a
view and select essentially a filter or query to populate the view. The way I'm
using it is I've assigned a variety of messages in various folders to a
'priority' category and created a custom view for all messages whose category is
'priority'. This way, I can have my incoming messages filtered into their
respective folders, when I read the message, if its something I need to take
care of later, I set its category to priority and later, instead of having to
click on each folder that I set priority messages in (and having to remember all
of them!) I simply go to my custom views pane and select the custom view I
created for 'priority' messages - regardless of what folder the message is in, I
can now see all my 'priority' categorized messages in one pane. This is
powerful - I highly recommend this type of functionality for Mozilla Mail/News.
