In GMail, using the hangouts feature to have your contacts visible to chat, if you click an available contact, GMail opens a chat box. In Chrome, focus is also set to the text input in the chat box, so you can start typing. In Firefox (tested with 32.0.3), focus remains on the rest of the window, so at best nothing happens, and if keyboard shortcuts are enabled for GMail, every keystroke has the chance of opening a new message, deleting something, etc.
This doesn't happen with the older GMail chat system, only with Hangouts.

Steps to reproduce:

In an open GMail tab, click on a Hangouts available contact. A chat box will display. Try typing.

Actual results:
Nothing happens if GMail keyboard shortcuts are not active.
GMail interprets the keystrokes if keyboard shortcuts are active. E.g. Starting to type "Caroline" opens a new message box ("c" is the keyboard shortcut for "compose new mail").

Expected results:
As in Chrome/Chromium, clicking on an available contact should display a chat box for the contact with focus on the text input, and typing should enter the text in that box.
I've just tested in my personal GMail. Assuming you mean the list of contacts on the left, below the folders? When I click a contact, GMail opens and focuses the chat box. No idea why it doesn't work for you :-/
It has been three months. It works for me too now.
