That might have been the cause since the phone date and time are often messed up upon reboot

Yes, that's bug 1032101 and bug 1048154. Sometimes the Marketplace app does warn you that you have the wrong time and date, I've also seen that you just get a blank page. When you set the date and time correctly, then it's working fine again. For a normal user, it is very difficult to find out that they can't access the Marketplace, because the time and date is set wrong.
