On the Mac, Mozilla and Explorer seem to have different ways of making a URL/
bookmark/favourite file by dragging to the desktop.
The Mozilla url file is a TEXT data file but the Explorer url file is 0 length
file with only a resource fork. It seems reasonable that Mozilla should be
able to load both.
I've tried via File/Open and via drag-and-drop.
Mozilla url files seem to work fine.
This is an RFE. Explorer doesn't make a real Mac OS Internet Shorcut file, but rather its'
own proprietary ".url" type. You can even see that Explorer's shortcut file has a different,
if related, icon (notice the "e" in place of the usual "@"), and that the file's Kind is "Internet
Exporer Document."
Revising Summary and Severity, and confirming.
(Note: Mac IE handles Mozilla WPL shortcuts, and iCab handles both IE and Mozilla
shortcuts.)
(Topic for further research: is there, in fact, Apple Developer Documentation for
composing and writing these files?)

This bug is targeted at a Mac classic platform/OS, which is no longer supported
by mozilla.org. Please re-target it to another platform/OS if this bug applies
there as well or resolve this bug.
I will resolve this bug as WONTFIX in four weeks if no action has been taken.

Reconfirming using Mozilla-Mac/1.7b, Firefox 2004-05-04-07-trunk and Camino
2004050308 (v0.8b). An IE-created .url file is not processed by either.
Safari: .url dragged to browser window, .url file is revealed in Finder.
.url file opened via File/Open dialog displays target URL correctly.
Mozilla & Firefox: .url dragged to browser window results in a Opening download
dialog; Mozilla thinks the file is of type message/external-body and prompts the
user for action. Opening via File/Open dialog has same effect.
Camino: .url dragged to browser window results in file being downloaded to
default download location. .url file is disabled in File/Open dialog and thus
nonselectable.
