I am using the modern 'look'. After opening a second window through the file menu, I found that painting gets progressively worse. Currently, the scrollbar is not displayed (although if I click where the scroll bar should be, it works.) Also, all the widgets on this form are rendered in 2D completely using black and white lines. No filling. Interestingly, when I try and view the windows "Start" menu, nothing appears, and the Windows desktop is failing to repaint properly as well.
Classic symptoms of running out of GDI resources with Win9x. You're probably trying to run too many programs for WinMe's little brain. Run the Resource Meter that's under Accessories -> System Tools to verify this. If it's not there, add it through Add/Remove programs -> Windows Setup Marking INVALID, as it's a Windows issue. Re-open with comments if you think otherwise.

two windows shouldn't be enough to cause moz problems. i don't mind seeing bugs like this marked as duplicates, but they aren't invalid. the only way to get IE to mess up this badly is for something else to be a huge pig (hint: mozilla/netscape6)

OK, maybe I jumped the gun on this one. If there is a bug about Mozilla using excessive system resources, then perhaps this one is a dupe of that. My thinking was that the user was running a good number of applications *before* running Mozilla, and the extra resources requested by Mozilla was enough to put Windows over the edge. A good test would be to check User/System/GDI resources before running Mozilla and also while Mozilla is running. I have WinMe on a system, and it's an absolute DOG resource-wise, running Mozilla or not.
FYI, I was running absolutely no applications prior to starting up Mozilla. I had also just started up the machine, so I don't expect that there was any dirt lying about in memory. BTW, I am using build 0.9.5. What I find with Resource Meter is that everytime I click on a link in the second window, both System and GDI resources fall steadily. Perhaps Mozilla is not releasing resources properly. A similar test with IE finds that System and GDI resources hold steady. Would you like further information?
Just a note: maybe it has something to do with tables and/or frames. I noticed that even with one window open (and no other applications), viewing and reloading a page like my.yahoo.com multiple times, leads to a steady drop in GDI and system resources. my.yahoo.com is a bonanza of nested tables...
Reporter: can you please give us a step-by-step procedure to reproduce this bug -- URLs you load, etc.?
Reporter: 0.9.5 is old. Please try a more recent build: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/nightly/latest/mozilla-win32-talkback.zip (as always, be sure to delete your old Mozilla directory before installing the new one) Also, you may wish to upgrade to the most recent version of your video card drivers. It's not an ATI by chance, is it?
This has gotten much worse for me with 0.9.7 on Windows 98. It happens almost every time I use Mozilla any more. I have not seen the problem with Windows 2000. And, actually, my Windows 2000 machine that DOES work does have an ATI card. The Windows 98 machine has NVidia. The problem manifests itself even with only a couple of windows open and nothing else of any import running after a reboot.
Under Win98, I'm showing system and user resources 60% free, GDI resources about 78% free, and I'm seeing the problem. Every time I use Mozilla for more than a couple minutes. This bug makes Mozilla 0.9.7 impossible to use for more than about 2 minutes on Win98. Even post 0.9.6 builds did not have this problem. Please confirm this or just try it for a few minutes on Win 98. The interesting thing is that even exiting mozilla, getting rid of the mozilla icon on the taskbar, making sure mozilla processes are no longer running, the problem seems to manifest itself more rapidly after restarting mozilla. Mozilla is not using an unreasonable amount of memory, and I have adequate free system memory. (Not even swapping yet.)
Steps to reproduce are very simple: * Open one browser window (say www.altavista.com, my default home) * Open the mail/news window. (As you work with mail or news, you'll start seeing scrollbars failing to work right at this point and attachments to mail/news repainting improperly... a band is left at the top or the bottom of the message body window.) * Open another window. Really, any 3 windows reproduce the problem 100% of the time. I have 2 browser windows open now to file this bug, let me open mail. Bang. Mozilla is unusable again. Seems that any 3 windows is the charm.
Please, oh please, somebody confirm this on Win 98. It makes Mozilla absolutely unusable. It actually makes my web server stop working and forces me to reboot my system after using Mozilla for a few minutes. Reinstallation of Mozilla does not help, but this problem manifests itself repeatedly and all the time. I'm going to have to switch to a different browser. I can't confirm this bug; I have no rights. The Man is always bringing me down.
Reporter: have you tried upgrading your video card driver to the latest version?
WD, thanks for thinking about this. To make sure, I downloaded and installed the latest drivers from nVidia (4.13.01.2311). The problem still remains. I'm curious as to why you asked this though--was there a change in fundamental painting routines on Windows since 0.9.6?
I have reverted to build 2001120303 (this was post 0.9.6) and I can't get the problem to occur with this build. I have more windows open than should be allowed, and everything is fine. I've tried Java, plugins, mail, news, and no problems. Something went bad in 0.9.7.
Reporter: IS this still a problem with 0.9.9 or later ?
sorry to be doing this from memory, but I too had problems with 0.9.7 on win98, but they went away for me in 0.9.8/win98, and I had no problems with 0.9.9 or RC1 (since then I've been only on win2k). Marking WFM - no response from reporter after more than 30 days. If reporter or someone else sees this happening with a recent build, please reopen.
